15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Applications:
1. The city of the great King is Jerusalem. The Lord chose that His Name would be there! Comment on the following verses:
Jerusalem would be one of the most loved cities in the world if the Jewish people could be eliminated. Yet Jerusalem without the Jews would cease to be anything more than just another city. It is "Israel and Jerusalem" together that creates love or hatred. Jerusalem was never called the Zion of God until it was taken by David and made the capitol of the Jewish nation. God actually called Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldeans/Babylonians to make Him a Nation and to establish that nation in the Promise Land and Jerusalem as its center. God chose Jerusalem before Abraham or David was born and ordained it to become His beloved city and then called His chosen to establish it for His glory in the earth.

- Zechariah 2:12 -And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.
2. Mt. Sinai is spoken of as the picture of the current Jerusalem, but we are told that we are part of the spiritual Jerusalem which is Mount Zion because God dwells within us by the Holy Spirit.
- Galatians 4:24-26 -Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. - Hebrews 12:18-24 - For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

- Revelation 21:12 -And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
4. In the Psalmist's day, Jerusalem was the city of the great King. It was beautiful in elevation and all could see it as the city on the hill. ....Today, we are like the mountain of the Lord to those around us. The Lord dwells within us as believers. ... Jesus said we are a city on a hill. The Lord is in us; we will not fail! Our light brings hope to others. Don't hide it under a bush, but show the good works of the Father. Comment on the following Scriptures:
- Matthew 5:14-16 -Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. - Philippians 2:14-15 -14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; - Revelation 1:20 -The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

- 1 Chronicles 16:23-29 - Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.
24 Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.25 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.26 For all the gods of the people are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.27 Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.28 Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.29 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. - Psalm 29:1-4Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength.
2 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters.4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty 9-11 - The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.10 The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.11 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace. - Psalm 50:1,2 The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.14Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: - 15,And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
- 23 -Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.
- Psalm 96:1-9 -O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.3 Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.4 For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.6 Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.7 Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.8 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.9 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. - Isaiah 52:1,6-10- Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. 6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.
7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!8 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.9 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for theLord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.10 The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. - Romans 10:12-17 -For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

4. The wise and the foolish must die and leave their wealth to others. They actually think their houses here would be forever and last for all generations? Applications:
1. The Psalmist wants everyone to know that he does not fear or envy those who trust in their wealth and boast in their riches. He fully understands that they do not have a good future without the Lord in their life. What does the Bible say about those who trust in their wealth rather than in God?
- Psalm 62:10 -Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
- Proverbs 3:9 -Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
- Proverbs 11:24,25,28 - There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. 28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch
- Proverbs 13:22 -A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
- Proverbs 23:4 - Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
- Malachi 3:8-10 -8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
- Matthew 6:19-21 -19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
- Matthew 6:24-33 -No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
- Matthew 13:22 - He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
- Mark 10:25 -It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
- Luke 12:15-21 -15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
- Luke 12:29-33 -29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth
- Acts 20:35 -I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
- 2 Corinthians 9:7 -7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
- Philippians 4:11-13 -11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
- 1 Timothy 6:7-10,17-19 -For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
- Hebrews 13:5 - Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
- James 1:9-12 - Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
- 1 John 2:15-17 - Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever
- Revelation 3:17-18 -Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
2. The Psalmist said that no matter how much money a man may have, he could not redeem the soul of his brother. Redemption means to "buy back". Jesus did this for our souls with His precious blood. No earthly wealth could ever do that for us! What does the Bible tell us about how we should value our redemption?
- Matthew 16:26 - For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
- Matthew 20:28 -Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many
- Mark 10:45 - For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

- 1 Corinthians 7:23 -Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
- Hebrews 9:12 - Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
- 1 Peter 1:18-19 -Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
- Revelation 5:9-10 -And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
3. The Psalmist said that those who put their trust in wealth alone would end their lives in Sheol (vs.14), but he was confident that the Lord had redeemed his soul from the power of Sheol and God Himself would receive him. (vs.15) ... We have that confidence of eternal life as well! As a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, what are the promises of eternal life for us?
- John 3:16-18 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
- John 5:24 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
- John 11:25 -Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
- John 14:1-3 -Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
- 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 -Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2 Corinthians 5:8 -We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
